How do you take your coffee? Two sugars? A side of social media?
Discussion has emerged about what influence social media has on the coffee industry after two London cafes, Ozone Coffee Roastery and Feya, were ranked in the top 10 most popular coffee shops online.
The analysis was done by TikTok with betting company Betway who studied Instagram hashtags, google searches and views on CoffeeTok.
Sarushka Reddy, group marketing and digital manager at Ozone Coffee Roasters, told CityNews:
“We’re thrilled…Our goal has always been to create human connection, and social media helps that vision come alive”.
“Social media is amazing for the coffee scene, it allows us to connect with others in the industry, share our brand story but also listen to feedback, and stay attuned to our customers preferences. I think it’s really important for coffee businesses and creators to be active on social.”
However, the ranking raises questions about which age demographic these cafes appeal to.
Paul Rooke, Executive Director of the British Coffee Association, offered his warmest congratulations to the winning teams. He also raises the question of whether members of the older generation are visiting these cafes:
“Our own research shows that 80% of UK households buy instant coffee for in-home consumption, particularly those aged 65 and older. Ground coffee and single-serve coffee pods are increasingly popular – especially among millennials – so it would be interesting to see how much of the social media traffic comes from which demographic?”
Nonetheless, Mr Rooke notes the importance of social media, “it’s through social media that many businesses seek to grow and secure new customers.”

One thing is for certain, as Mr Rooke says, “London has a booming coffee culture”.
