OpenAI has disabled the use of ChatGPT’s voice ‘Sky’, after actress Scarlett Johansson accused the company and its founder Sam Altman of copying her voice.

Internet users and personalities from the entertainment industry have compared Open AI’s voice ‘Sky’ with the character of an AI companion that actress Scarlett Johansson played in the movie Her (2013).

Actress Scarlett Johansson has taken legal action against Open AI and its founder Sam Altman. Johansson said in a statement that she was previously contacted twice by the company to participate in a project to voice its new chatbot.

The first time was in November 2023, when she declined. Open AI contacted her again to “reconsider” two days before the voice was released.

Open AI’s voice ‘Sky’ was released and widely publicized on May 13 at the event of the new ChatGPT-4o artificial intelligence model.

A week after Open AI voice ‘Sky’ was released, the company published a clarification about “how the voices for ChatGPT were chosen”:

“Sky’s voice is not an imitation of Scarlett Johansson but belongs to a different professional actress using her own natural speaking voice. To protect their privacy, we cannot share the names of our voice talents.”, states the article.

Open AI also said that it has been collaborating with entertainment industry professionals and compensating voice actors for their work.

Scarlett Johansson participated on an actors strike that focused on studios using AI to copy actors’ faces and voices. The strikes ended six months ago, after reaching a deal with studios that AI would to be used without actor’s permission.
