Councillor Sharon Holder attended the opening ceremony for the newly installed bike hangar at Overstone Road.

Nine bike hangars debuted on the streets of Hammersmith & Fulham on 25 January. The council plans to install 500 storage units with a capacity of six bikes each by 2027, creating an additional 3,000 parking spaces.

The first new bicycle hangar in the recent expansion has been inaugurated on Overstone Road. A hangar was situated on the same road in 2019, according to a map shared by the council. However, the hangar was not listed as an existing bike hangar in the borough in 2023.

The new hangars can be found at:

  • Coningham Road and Findon Road, W12
  • Devonport Road and Scotts Road, W12
  • Coverdale Road and Uxbridge Road, W12
  • Pennard Road and Uxbridge Road, W12
  • Bulwer Street and Aldine Court, W12
  • Comeragh Road and Vereker Road, W14
  • Oakbury Road and Wandsworth Bridge Road, SW6
  • Anselm Road and Tamworth Street, SW6.

An additional 17 bicycle hangars are scheduled to be installed by the end of March. The location for these parking units will be chosen based on resident demand and community consultations.

The goal of providing 3,000 more parking spots is to alleviate the existing waiting list. According to a Freedom of Information (FOI) release on 28 July 2023, there were 3,751 people on the waiting list, with 56 bike hangars already in use at full capacity.

The hangars located on Epple Road, Waldemar Avenue, Masbro Road, and Vereker Road were the most requested, with around 200 people awaiting a free spot in each bike hangar.

Theft-resistant bike storage

Cllr Sharon Holder H&F Cabinet Member for Public Realm said that residents require weatherproof, secure bike storage that can “withstand power drill and angle grinder attacks”.

Hammersmith & Fulham is one of the top five boroughs in London for bike theft. There has been a slight reduction in the number of crimes over the years.

London registered 16,172 bicycle theft offenses in 2023. Hackney recorded 1,410 thefts; Tower Hamlets, 1,281; Westminster, 1,169; Hammersmith & Fulham, 1,054; and Camden documented 1,023 bicycles.
