Tomorrow is International Women’s Day and to celebrate the British Library is holding a special event this evening.
Carmen Callil will host a night of discussion and film related to all things female.
Callil is the founder of the Virago Express, a publishing company she set up in 1973 that solely publishes books by women.
Callil is is said to have helped reclaim women’s literature by giving women back their voices through her company.
Tonight’s discussion will include looking back at Virago’s history, with its current publisher Lennie Goodings. Claire Whalley, managing director of What Larks Productions, who made a film about the Virago Express, will also be speaking.
Excerpts from Whalley’s documentary film, Virago: Changing the World One Page at a Time will also be screened.
Tonight’s event not only celebrates International Women’s Day, but also the British Library’s new acquisition of the Carmen Callil archive. It will join the previously held Virago archive.
