London pubs dating back to the 1600s are said to have resident ghosts

One haunted pub is the Sutton Arms in Barbican. Here, the story goes that a red-haired elderly ghost named Charlie suddenly appears, grins at customers, then disappears into thin air.

Another allegedly haunted pub is The Viadect Tavern on Newgate Street. It’s said that former prisoners still live under the building in the old prison cells, and keep haunting today’s staff.

The pub’s reputation has brought ghost hunting groups to the area, with hopes of catching a glimpse of the dead former inmates.

It was recently reported that a woman ran screaming from the cellars after a ghost spoke to her.

Or, if you fancy a foray into the world of serial killing, the Ten Bells in Spitalfields may be able to give you some insight. The pub is visited by ghost tours, promising an eerie glimpse into the life of Jack the Ripper. Over the years, it has had its fair share of ghoulish happenings: these include the apparition of a landlord murdered with an axe and also the murder of a baby.

Although the validity of ghost tales like these ones are questionable, it can’t be denied it’s a very fitting way to spend halloween.
