With airbrushed images of models and celebrities dominating our screens, more and more children are becoming unhappy with the way they look.

The Body Confidence event in Brick Lane aims to encourage a healthier body image, particularly in young people. Ten years of age is the average for a child to start dieting. For example, an inquest found 14-year-old Fiona Geraghty committed suicide because of fears she was overweight.

A group of MPs recently said that the implied ideal body image projected from many television adverts isn’t physically achievable for 95% of us. Chris Calland is an education consultant who works in primary schools across Bristol, helping promote positive body image from a young age.

By the age of 13, 1 in 3 girls and 1 in 5 boys are distressed about their shape. With the help of events like this, it is hoped that children and adults can start feeling confident about their bodies, whatever they look like.
