TfL (Transport for London) has announced controversial plans to be made official tonight at a meeting in Westminster. It will be the first public discussion concerning switching to automated train lines since the partial automation of the Piccadilly and Northern lines in 2014.
Changing to automated trains will inevitably result in driver redundancies and increased public concerns about non-manned trains.
At the same time, the update would lead to more efficient trains, operating better during crowded rush hours.
During his last mayoral campaign in 2012, now Foreign Secretary Boris Johnson promised that there would be driverless Tube trains within 10 years time.
There are already partially automated trains in use in London, including the Jubilee, Central, Victoria and Northern lines. This particular automation of the trains should be extended to the other lines by 2022, and will also be used on Thameslink and Crossrail.
After tonight’s presentation, the plan is expected to go underway as soon as possible.
