The Beatles performed their final ever gig on the roof of 3 Savile Row 49 years ago today.

On January 30th, 1969 — The Beatles climbed five stories to the top of their Apple Corps HQ at 3 Savile Row and played one of the most memorable concerts in music history. This event was part of a project originally called ‘Get Back’. This was a desperate try to restore the original idea of the band with its rock roots.

In a 42-minute set, the Beatles played nine takes of five songs before the local police asked them to reduce the volume. Footage of the event was then used in the documentary ‘Let it Be’ in 1970.

“We went on the roof in order to resolve the live concert idea, because it was much simpler than going anywhere else; also nobody had ever done that, so it would be interesting to see what happened when we started playing up there. It was a nice little social study. We set up a camera in the Apple reception area, behind a window so nobody could see it, and we filmed people coming in. The police and everybody came in saying, ‘You can’t do that! You’ve got to stop.’ George Harrison in Anthology.

Despite their intent to get back together, the ‘Fab Four’ never managed to peacefully return to what they used to be. The Liverpool rock band was formed in 1960s and during the decade that they worked together they became one of the most influential rock bands ever.
