A Labour MP has called on the Government to provide councils with powers to clamp down on noisy Airbnb guests.

Airbnb is a website which allows people to rent out their homes to visitors for short lets while they are away.

Figures released this week showed that Islington Council received seven times as many complaints this year from neighbours about excessive noise from visitors as they received last year.

The number of complaints in the year to September rose from six in 2015 to 42 this year.

Karen Buck, MP for Westminster North, has said a “tipping point” is now being reached with complaints, which is likely to force the Government to reconsider aspects of the Deregulation Act 2015.

This act made it possible for people to rent out their homes for up to ninety days a year without informing their council.

But Mrs Buck believes this 90-day rule is being flouted and individuals should register their letting activities with councils, which would allow councils to monitor and regulate the system better.

“This is not to stop people letting their properties, I am fine with that. But they [councils] have to be able to notify where this is happening,” Mrs Buck said.
