HSBC has announced plans to close branches across London, which they say is due to customers’ preference for online banking. With more customers turning to the internet and their phones to carry out banking procedures, HSBC no longer regard having local branches as a priority.
The trade union Unite describes this as a “dark day” for HSBC’s workforce, and is calling on the banking industry to rethink these actions.
Unite national officer Dominic Hook said that without doubt financial services will struggle if our high streets are left with no local branches. It is unclear yet how significantly and in what way these closures will affect customer service and staff in local banks.
