Hackney Council has launched a petition demanding that the Government cancel its plans to increase business rates.
Over 370 businesses in Hackney risk to see their rates raised by £10000 to £100000 following the Government’s current plans.
Hackney Council and the East End Trades Guild are asking for valuations to be put on hold until small businesses’ rates relief is increased.
To add to the situation, many businesses currently classed as ‘small’ will shift to ‘medium’ status – denying them of small business rates relief.
Hackney has the highest rateable value increase in London, with an average hike of 46%.
So far, 732 people have signed the petition on change.org .
