A new restaurant called the Mare Street Market in Hackney opened last night. The space itself will take over the ground floor of the former Hackney council building Keltan House.
Owner and chef, Gizzi Erskine called her new restaurants’s opening last night “a taste of success”.
Mare Street Market in Hackney uses fresh ingredients from local producers in all of its dishes. It will be the Hackney-born owner’s first permanent restaurant, following a number of successful pop-ups in the area.
Opening this week
It’s a new project from Barworks. The previously council office block has been renovated and is being filled with the restaurant and a clutch of local businesses including a record shop, a florist, a bakery, deli and cocktail bar.
Not all of the shops are open yet, but will be in short time. According to their Instagram, @marestreetmarket, it says that the bar, deli, open kitchen, shops and the garden are opening on Thursday this week.
Californian-Mediterranean menu
Gizzi Erskine has had several successful pop-ups and has written cooking books and presented cooking shows on TV.
Erskine who has lived in Hackney her whole life is launching Mare Street Market with founder Marc Francis-Baum and Phillip Way. Francis-Baum is the co-owner of pub empire Barworks and Way is the co-owner of Flying Horse Coffee.
In an interview with th Evening standard Erskine said that she will have a Californian-Mediterranean menu, a wood-fired rotisserie, a raw bar, a bespoke egg menu for brunch and Sunday roasts.
