The big freeze is bring snow days and sledging for some but it also comes with a health warning.

When the temperature drops below 8C, some people are at increased risk of a heart attack, stroke or pneumonia. The cold weather can also affect people with mental health problems like depression.

The NHS have issued tips for staying healthy and safe in the cold weather:

Keep your home warm – especially your bedroom

Your heating should be set at 18C. To reduce the risk of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome), babies should sleep in rooms heated between 16C and 20C.

Try not to sit still for more than an hour or so indoors

Get up and stretch your legs – even if it’s just to go upstairs and back down again.

Wear several layers of clothes rather than one chunky layer

Wear clothes made from cotton, wool or fleecy fibres to help maintain body heat.

Wear shoes with good grip to prevent you from slipping and falling

And remember to check up on older neighbours and relatives

Make sure they’re safe and well and have stocks of food and medicines so they don’t need to go out during the cold weather.
