Aaron Ramsdale’s father has hit out at the way in which his son was dropped as the first-choice goalkeeper by Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta.
Ramsdale was previously Arsenal’s starting goalkeeper for the last two seasons. However, he has not regularly featured for the North London side since 3 September. Since then, Raya has taken over the role, featuring in important victories such as the 2-0 game against Sevilla.
Arteta did not inform Ramsdale that he would be second choice. Ramsdale Snr. said, “our family didn’t have a clue, Aaron didn’t have a clue that he was not going to carry on playing.”
Nick Ramsdale questioned Arteta’s decision to sign his son to a long-term contract in May, but then sign Raya. “(Arteta) said he wanted Aaron. But now David Raya is back on the market and he had David Raya,” he lamented. “Why would you extend a goalkeeper or any player’s contract and then two or three months later [sign someone else]?”
Could Ramsdale be headed for the exit?
Ramsdale’s father has said the goalkeeper has struggled to stay positive on the bench.
“Aaron lost that smile. And it’s difficult to see him there,” Nick commented. “We all keep saying: ‘you need to keep smiling’. And at the moment in time, we haven’t got that smile in him.”
The goalkeeper himself has admitted publicly that he was struggling with his lack of playing time. Speaking to reporters last month, he said that he was “suffering and hurting” after losing his place to Raya.
It has lead to speculation that Ramsdale could soon leave Arsenal to increase his playing time.
