A south London art collective is displaying posters to raise awareness for what they have described as “political inaction” over the war in Gaza.

Collective Ending is calling on Vicky Foxcroft, the MP for Lewisham and Deptford, “to move towards a genuine solution to end the Israeli occupation of Palestine”.

The artists say they are frustrated by the local MP’s inaction.

The artists said their billboard aims to make a point by mirroring politicians’ refusal “to comment on genocide”.

Collective Ending’s studio members designed the posters, which feature QR codes linking to over 75 online resources.

These include local petitions and information from direct action groups based in the UK, Israel, and the Palestinian Territories.

The campaign has been positively received by some locals in the area, and on X, formerly known as Twitter. One user wrote:”Massive kudos to whoever put up this billboard in Lewisham, London.”

Collective Ending supports an immediate ceasefire in Gaza, and a full end to the Israeli occupation.

The group also view the MP’s abstention as “a refusal to comment on the 20,000+ lives that have been lost due to the ongoing violence towards Palestinian civilians by the Israeli government”.

On 7 October 2023, Hamas carried out a surprise attack on Israel, igniting the most significant military escalation in the region in recent years. Israel retaliated with an extensive aerial bombardment of the Gaza Strip, followed by a ground invasion.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres has described the hostilities as creating “appalling human suffering, physical destruction and collective trauma across Israel and the Occupied Palestinian Territory”.

Like the Government’s, the Labour Party’s official stance is to support “humanitarian pauses” in Gaza.

Last year there was pressure within Labour to abstain from the vote calling for an immediate ceasefire.

On 12 November 2023, MPs voted against the amendment, 293 to 125. More than 50 Labour MPs voted for a ceasefire in Gaza, with ten frontbenchers resigning following the vote. MP Vicky Foxcroft abstained from voting.

Collective Ending told City News “there has been local traction that shows we’re not alone in our views”.
