A flat in Camden, billed as “affordable housing”, requires any potential buyer to have a minimum salary of £65,000.
The property in West Hampstead has a market value of £550,000, but is available on a shared ownership basis, with 25% up for sale and the rest available on a rental basis.
The shared ownership scheme is part of the government’s plan to make more affordable housing available for first time buyers.
Many potential buyers City News spoke to on Wednesday felt that the insistence on the salary meant the property was far from affordable.
One commented, “I have a son who has just left university. He has a job and works hard but is nowhere near able to afford one of these places.
They build these flats in these places which are not affordable for most people.”
Camden Council, who hold responsibility for enforcing the affordable housing policy, were unavailable for comment.
