Islington Council announces new plan to tackle the capital’s poor air quality.

The big pollution problem in London has been a hot topic in recent months and Islington Council is now leading the way in tackling the problem. 100 new roadside electric chargers will be installed in various locations within the borough in the hope that Islington residents will rethink the way they power their vehicles.

The electric installations are being supported and promoted by Labour MP and Islington’s environment leader Claudia Webbe, who believes that the chargers will have a positive effect on Islington’s air quality. The chargers are planned to be built into electricity poles. While most would take 3-4 hours for a full charge some would be faster, with an 80% charge being completed in approximately 30 minutes.

However the plan is not welcomed by all – many believe that the jump from diesel to electric cars is not feasible for the majority of London residents, especially the within a congested borough such as Islington.

Despite skepticism, the Council’s plan is to have 100 electric chargers installed in easily accessible locations within the next year. Islington could well be on track to become London’s greenest borough for the second year in a row.
