The Grade II-listed Haggerston Baths are up for a re-vamp, with the new business proposals including a ‘micro hotel’ and a shopping centre.

Hackney mayor Phillip Glanville is putting the choice to residents, stating that “The aim of this project is to identify a long-term […] future for the building” and urging people to get involved before the final decision is made.

Residents had previously hoped to see the baths restored to their former glory. However, in December, the council announced that negotiations for a pool had broken down, after the developer concerned was unable to provide “the reassurance needed that the scheme […] would actually be delivered.”

Of the two remaining developers, London and Regional want to the building to host a micro hotel. By contrast, Castle Forge’s proposals include cafés, shops and pop-ups.

Whoever wins will sign a 250-year lease, pay rent to the council, and spend £20 million to renovate Haggerston Baths – of which Hackney Town Hall will still retain ownership.

Hackney Council insist they will not make a decision until they have heard from residents on which option ‘best protects the building’s heritage and meets local needs’, holding a meeting between developers and residents on 12th April.

It will start at 6.30pm at Centre 151 on Whiston Road. Online surveys are also available for those who are unable to attend the event.
