In the 2021 Autumn budget, the Chancellor announced £500m would go towards family support. This includes £82m for Family Hubs.

Family Hubs are safe havens for parents who are struggling and need extra support from others. The Hubs specifically work with children aged 0-19. They offer antenatal, postnatal, and breastfeeding support. They are dedicated to helping struggling parents who require that extra help.

The Chancellor and the Prime Minister then emphasised the importance of the first 1,001 days of a child’s life as they set to give children the ‘best possible start’.

Co-Founder of the Family Hubs network, Dr. Samantha Callen, later said the money will build on the strengths and foundations of the community already in place.

Despite the optimistic tone of Rishi Sunak’s Budget, some critics afterwards said that in a post-Covid economy there aren’t sufficient funds to be donated to social projects such as Family Hubs.

Political Journalist, Georgie Frost, appreciates The Chancellor has to make tough decisions to reduce the deficit but suggests the funding is insufficient. On this matter, Frost wrote that it is ‘not…an innovative, ambitious budget’. Later she does however say that she appreciates Britain is not in the same position as it was in 1998.

A new plan or more of the same?

After the Budget announcement, critics suggested that this is a recycled Labour initiative. They say it imitates the Sure Start Centres opened under Tony Blair in 1998, but with more limited funding and scope.

Soon after announcements, Labour Party MP David Lammy took to Twitter:

A day after Rishi Sunak announced the Budget to the House of Commons, many remain sceptical as to whether the money in the Budget allocated to Family Hubs will properly address issues. David Lammy is one of many who expresses their concern.

Despite financing concerns, Dr. Callen reinforced this budget will allow Local Authorities to build on these 75 Family Hubs.
