A new commission by London-based artist Rene Matić is opening tomorrow at Somerset House.
Drawing inspiration from the relationship between Somerset House and The Courtald Institute of Art, the recent Central Saint Martins graduate’s installation artworks are taking the form of participatory structures.
Matić’s work brings together themes of glitch feminism, post-blackness and subcultural theory.
Also opening this Friday: a new commission by artist Rene Matić, exploring ideas of preservation, protection and cultural property.
Taking the form of participatory structures, you are invited to retrieve pin badges to wear and/or pass on to others.

The artist’s structures will disrupt Somerset House’s neoclassical spaces, exploring ideas of heritage, protection and cultural preservation.
Visitors to London’s working arts centre will be invited to collect pin badges which they can keep or pass on to others.
The participatory structures will be located at several locations within the building, including Great Arch and Seamen’s Halls and the New Wing reception.
Matić’s work reaches back to the survival tactics and ‘tap dances’ of Brown babies in post-war Britain. They take music and dance-based movements such as Ska, 2-Tone and Northern soul as their starting point.
The commission opens to members of the public tomorrow until early February 2022.
