LUXMURALIS

A light and sound show has opened in a Westminster church, with the aim of celebrating the natural world.

The show, called “Life”, is an immersive experience designed around a single day – from sunrise to sunset. It aims to remind people of their responsibility to protect the planet by taking them on a journey through the earth, sea and sky.

Visitors start outside St Martin-in-the-Fields church and travel through the building, including the underground Crypt. The 40 minute experience culminates in a colourful 15 minute light show filling the entirety of the main church.

CEO for St Martin’s church, Chris Denton, says he wants the show to bring more attention and funding to the Grade I listed building.

“For many people who walk past it everyday and don’t see it — the fact that it’s bright and glowing gives it an added dimension, and hopefully cheers people up on a miserable January day.”

He hopes it’ll follow the success of last year’s “Space” exhibition which saw nearly ten thousand people visit the church over five days.

‘We create the stained glass windows of our time’

Sculptor Peter Walker designed the display. He returns with Luxmuralis, a collaborative team of artists, who also produced the “Space” show. He told City News that they aim to use fine art projection to encourage people to form their own narratives.

“We say we create the stained glass windows of our time. Hundreds of years ago people would have walked into these places, looked at the stained glass windows, and seen pictures like movie sets. We created the stories of our time to be enjoyed in a contemporary way that relates to how these buildings were used over centuries.”

The light show opened on Tuesday and is running until Saturday.
