Development in Hackney has created a problem with gentrification.

This week, artists in Hackney Wick have launched an exhibition to raise awareness about the controversial redevelopment of Hackney Wick and the wider borough, by developers and big business.

The exhibition’s artists describe Hackney as a ‘community in mourning’, where cranes, bulldozers, and developers have pushed out their local community and the area’s heritage.

Andrew Sissons, Director of Strategy at Hackney Walk, the borough’s new shopping district called Hackney Walk, said, “The best benefit of Urban Regeneration is creating opportunities for the local community…Yes, there is change and renewal but there are many new opportunities that were not here before”

Hackney’s unemployment rate is amongst the highest in the UK.
The council’s regeneration strategy, aims to close the gap between the Hackney and London employment rates by 2018.
Therefore, Though some say gentrification is problem, the ongoing regeneration of Hackney to provide jobs to the local community is a required necessity if the council is to meet their aims
