An historic pub that has been in the heart of Soho since 1847 is under threat by a chain takeover.
National pub and restaurant chain Fullers, which owns the freehold to Soho’s Coach and Horses pub, is threatening not to renew the family-run business’ lease.
Instead it could turn what is regarded by regulars as ‘a great British institution’, into a standard chain.
A petition signed by over 5,000 people is calling for a change in law to protect the heritage of the pub.

He and his daughter have owned the pub for the past 12 years. Together they have turned it what they claim is the first fully vegan pub in London.
Choat says that regulars at the pub are part of a big family community
Angus Smith, a longstanding customer at the Coach and Horses, says that a takeover would ‘rip out the soul’ of what is an ‘authentic, honest and unique’ pub.
He added the Coach and Horses is one of the ‘last few survivors’ of its kind.

Many who support the petition believe turning a historic pub into a Wetherspoons-style chain would be a huge loss to Soho and to London.
Freeholders Fullers were unavailable for comment.
