A man has been fined after pleading guilty to stealing cash from an unknown tourist at the Tower of London.
Westminster Magistrates Court heard how police had been called to the Tower of London on 19 November after CCTV operators noticed a group of four distracting tourists and attempting to take items from them.
When searched by police the accused was found with £300 worth of South Korean wons which he admitted in court had been stolen from an unknown tourist.
At sentencing, the defence lawyer argued that the man had no previous convictions and had come to the UK from Romania with honourable intentions of working full time as a builder.
However, it was argued, he had become involved with the group stealing from tourists in a moment of madness.
The judge accepted the Crown Prosecution Service’s argument that the nature of the crime meant the theft was pre-planned and targeted. But she chose to step outside sentencing guidelines and order the defendant to pay only a fine with no further punishment.
The stolen money will remain in police custody for now, as it is still unknown who it was taken from.
