Flower tributes left at Clapham Common by well-wishers in memory of Sarah Everard.

It was opened by senior coroner Patricia Harding, who gave her condolences to the family.

Ms Harding said: “The body of Sarah has now been released to her family in order that a funeral can take place.”

The hearing lasted less than half an hour, with the inquest adjourned pending the outcome of criminal proceedings.

Police investigations into the 33-year-olds death are ongoing.

Ms Everard’s cause of death is yet to be determined. A second post-mortem is underway after the first proved inconclusive, a coroner said.

She went missing on March 3 while walking to her home in Brixton, after visiting a friend in nearby Clapham.

The search for Ms Everard lasted a week before her body was found in woodland near Ashford in Kent.

Police investigation

Wayne Couzens, a serving police officer, has been charged with her murder. It is understood that he was off-duty at the time of the incident.

The 48-year old suspect from Deal in Kent was attached to an armed unit responsible for guarding diplomatic buildings in London.

A large police presence remains in the town of Sandwich as the search for clues into Ms Everard’s death continues.

One of the investigating officers, Detective Inspector Lee Tullet, told the inquest the police had established Ms Everard’s final movements and plotted her route home.

“Police were first involved on March 4 in the afternoon – this was as a result of Sarah’s boyfriend Josh contacting us as he had grown concerned he hadn’t been able to reach or contact her.

“There was no further activity on her phone.

“There was no social media presence and she failed to attend a meeting at work the following day.

“This was all very much out of character.”
