Camden Council is proposing to lease the Holborn Library and Cockpit Yard site to a private developer.

This will entail redevelopment of the interior and exterior of the library, and changes to the Arts workshop on the Cockpit Yard site.

In order to fund the redevelopment, approximately 100 residential units will be built on top of the library for social housing rental.

Residents in the area understand the need for social housing, but believe the proposed redevelopment is too large and will be damaging to the neighbourhood, due to noise and dirt from construction that could last up to 5 years.

They are particularly worried about the historic Great James Street, which includes Grade II* listed buildings and is the oldest complete Georgian Street in London.

However, Camden Councillor Awale Olad says the redevelopment will be beneficial for the area which is in need of more affordable housing.

He is also looking to quell residents fears, stating that there will be a public consultation about the redevelopment sometime in the new year.
