Sadiq Khan entered City Hall in April 2016 on a policy stance that focused on improving housing and homelessness in London.

The Mayor has since established a taskforce along with some of London’s largest charity organisations to develop policies for supporting the capital’s homeless population and also lobby the government to increase local funding for the issue.

It was announced yesterday that St. Mungo’s homeless shelter in Hackney will be the first permanent base of Sadiq Khan’s No Second Night Out Project. St Mungo’s are a homeless charity who provide beds and support to more than 2,500 people every night.

Mayor of Hackney, Philip Glanville, said “We are glad to support a permanent hub for the No Second Night Out programme here in Hackney in continued partnership with St Mungo’s. The hub which will make a real difference in a time where there is increasing demand on homelessness services and a challenging financial environment for both council and the voluntary sector.”

The plans announced yesterday will see the basement of this shelter converted to provide 25 “sit-up beds” for rough sleepers, with Hackney getting priority use.

In 2015-16, 8,096 people slept rough in London alone throughout 2015-16. This shows 6% rise in homelessness in the past year. 129 rough sleepers have died in London in the last six years and Hackney has an average of six new rough sleepers every month.

With homelessness a sa substantial growing problem in London, 25 further beds is surely not enough, but it is at least a good start.
