Camden’s indoor Stables Market was saved by sprinklers after a fire broke out in a market stall last night.
Security guards at the market site on Chalk Farm Road raised the alarm after a smoke alarm sounded and two sprinkler heads operated.
The sprinkler system helped control the fire spread until firefighters arrived and crews were able to confine the fire to the unit on the ground floor where the blaze originated.
Camden has seen a number of fires in the last few years. Back in 2014, almost 600 people were evacuated after a major fire broke out at the market.
A London Fire Brigade spokesperson said: “This incident highlights the clear benefits of sprinklers to businesses and we would urge all companies and business owners to install them.
“In this case the sprinklers controlled the fire spread, limiting damage to the building and preventing anyone from being put at risk from any fire.
“As well as limiting fire damage and being potentially life saving devices, sprinklers and other fire suppression systems help with business continuity by minimising disruption and allowing businesses to get back to normal as soon as possible.”
The Brigade was called at 2353 and the fire was under control at 0130 on Tuesday. Four fire engines and 21 firefighters and officers from Soho, West Hampstead, Euston and Paddington fire stations attended the scene.
The fire is believed to be accidental and due to an electrical fault.
