150 female refugees have come together to celebrate the completion of their ESOL english course qualification.
Their certificates of completion were rewarded to them by the Mayor of Islington, Councillor Richard Greening, which fittingly coincided with the eve of International Womens Day.
Currently 82% of refugees seeking help at one of the Islington refugee centers are homeless, with poverty and lack of education proving a serious barrier for the women’s ability to create a new life for themselves in the UK.
The ESOL qualification hopes to counteract these issues, with sufficient proficiency in English being seen as an essential tool to help the women access local services and integrate into the local community.
