Arsenal is the only football team in London with a tube named after it.

The station was originally known as Gillespie Road until October 1932.

It was Arsenal’s legendary manager, Herbert Chapman, who met with the Underground Electric Railways Company of London to change the name of their local tube station.

According to the Arsenal website, he said ‘Whoever heard about Gillespie Road? It’s Arsenal around here!’

Eager to build the club’s reputation, Herbert saw the importance between transport and footballing success. After months of lobbying, the station changed name from Gillespie Road to Arsenal. Tickets, maps and signs were replaced following the re-christening.

This makes Arsenal the only football team in London with a tube named after it.
