The award-winning programme, ran in conjunction with Canterbury Christ Church University, engaged isolated people in hands-on interactive activities with historical artefacts.

Age UK say that two fifths of all older people name television as their main form of company.

Helen Chatterjee, Head of Research & Training at UCL Culture, said that “having a regular place to go to, to learn something new, offered a great opportunity for them to improve their wellbeing; something they wouldn’t have had the opportunity to do before”.

Following the ten week scheme, many of the participants have continued making regular visits and some have even started University degrees.

A ‘best practice’ guide has been sent out to other museums across the city, guiding them on how to improve their accessibility to older people.

Some London museums, including all of those based at UCL, have pledged to extend the scheme beyond the initial 10 weeks.
