A cough lasting longer than 3 weeks is a symptom of tuberculosis.

According to Mark Jones, Senior Lecturer and Programme Director for Adult Nursing at City University, the public would have been at very low risk of catching tuberculosis in Timothy’s case.
Jones told City News an individual needs to be in very close proximity for a long period of time for them to be at any risk. Family members therefore should be the people most concerned.
The illness is often only picked up accidentally when someone is suffering from something else.
Jones believes the public have more contact with tuberculosis than some may think. Sitting next to an individual suffering from tuberculosis on a bus for instance would not put anyone in danger of catching the illness.
Can you make someone stay in hospital?
A person is allowed to refuse treatment and leave hospital unless medical staff believe the patient does not have the mental capacity to make such a decision. Jones believes making somebody stay in hospital is a complex matter.
Jones said unless the police have separate concerns regarding a patient, they should not intervene. The general public were at such little risk in this particular case.
