There has been an increase in complaints about rats in London.

Tower Hamlets came top of the list after receiving over 30,000 complaints over the five year period.  Brent came second with 19,978, with Camden reported as having 13,558. The numbers were gathered through a Freedom of Information request.

The figures recorded show a 10% increase in complaints since last year.

Ms Hall said that she made the FOI request after seeing footage of rats ‘swarming’ about the bins in Harrow in July.

She went on to explain: ‘If we want to avoid our city being overrun by rats… we need a co-ordinated approach to tackle this problem, led by the mayor’.

Rentokil pest control explained that cities provide ‘natural places for rodents to seek shelter, food and water’. A representative explained that as London’s density increases, the conditions for the rats will simply improve. Especially around areas with drainage problems and litter problems.
