The city hit UNAIDS 90:90:90 targets for the diagnosis and treatment of HIV and AIDS in 2016.
This means, in London:
90% of those living with the infection have been diagnosed
97% of those diagnosed are receiving treatment
97% of those on treatment are virally suppressed
Yasmin Dunkley, of Positive East, London’s largest HIV Charity, states ‘the main reason for London performing well and hitting the UN targets is rapid testing’.
Early diagnosis of HIV and AIDS is key
Rapid testing of HIV means people get can tested and receive results within one minute. The test consists of just one small prick of a finger and then a quick blood test.
Recently, the rapid tests were promoted by Prince Harry as a quick and easy way to get more people tested.
Testing is encouraged as the HIV virus can live inside someone for a decade without any outward symptoms.
