City University has received one of the worst ratings from The Free Speech University Ranking.

Online magazine ‘Spiked’ published The Free Speech University Ranking, that runs across the UK. City University was one of the two worst rated institutions. City University is proclaimed by the ratings to be a hostile environment for free speech.

The rating for City University has fallen dramatically since 2015. The Free Speech University Ranking notes that the university forces students to use transgender pronouns and reserves the right to cancel events if the speaker involved will attract adverse media attention.

The City University Student Union has a zero-tolerance approach to “lad-culture” and has banned three tabloid newspapers, before reinstating them after a backlash.

The Free Speech University Ranking has propelled the issue of campus censorship into the mainstream.

Each year The Free University Ranking is covered in depth across all major national print, broadcast and online media. MPs and Lords in both Houses of Parliament have also discussed it, and last year, the evidence was presented to the Joint Committee on Human Rights.

The Tabs Assistant Editor, Greg Barradale told city news that he thought “Spiked seems to be looking for any evidence tangentially related in order to make what has a grain of truth to it, into a panic where they can say there is a war on students.”
