Sufra, a new charity tackling food poverty in Islington, is holding a food collection at City, University of London this week.
Sufra has provided students with a shopping list of basic household items that are urgently needed by those living in poverty. Tuna cans, baby milk, biscuits, rice and tea are just a few of the items on this list.
Sufra has also launched a 5-day challenge to raise awareness for food poverty. Within this 5-day challenge, a basic food package equating to £5 is provided to try to recreate what a typical underprivileged family may have to live off.
Recent government statistics show that 22% of the Islington population lives in an income-deprived household.
Poverty seems to be an issue throughout the Borough of Islington, with a neighbourhood in each Islington ward being among the poorest 20% of neighbourhoods in England.
