The London Borough of Hackney covers an area of 19.06 square kilometres from Shoreditch in the South to Upper Clapton to the North.
There are 58 parks in the Borough, which boast open green parks, a lido and wetlands.
The Ramblers, the UK’s largest walkers’ rights organisation, aims to represent promote walking around the UK. They also promote accessibility to Britain’s footpaths and open areas.
Not a Traditional Walking Area
Oliver Hicks-Pattison, Senior Campaigns Officer at The Ramblers, has walked all 58 parks in Hackney. He nominated the neighbourhood for the award and thinks the area has a lot to offer.
Oliver says, “most urban neighbourhoods in this country are designed for cars, we are trying to showcase the neighbourhoods that put people first.
Walkers paradice: London Fields, Hackney
“Hackney is great as it has a lot of green spaces in it, a lot of well-maintained parks and wildlife areas.”
He added, “the pavements are all wide enough to get down and there a no cars on the pavements… there is a twenty-mile-per-hour zone across the borough to make it more difficult for cars to speed.”
“Historically the reputation of Hackney has not been one of a nice place to go walking… but the recognition [of winning] would be nice so people realise it’s a great green place.”
Incredible Variety
Simon Cole, a tour guide a local historian, says “there is incredible variety in Hackney, from Shoreditch, to Stoke Newington to Hackney Wick, there is a great industrial history.”
The founder of Hackney Tours added, “Walking has tremendous benefits for mental health as it brings people together and connects them. [It] creates a space where people can engage and talk. It’s a from of mindfulness and connecting with nature.”
