Today, the London Child Poverty Network held an event in Angel aimed at lessening such challenges and empowering young parents. Led by Sian Elliott, Research and Learning Officer for the organisation, the event’s focus was to give its attendees more knowledge on housing, employment rights and practical tips on managing finances.
The event comes in the wake of a new study undertaken by the charity, which revealed that more than half of young people with children are in poverty, at 54%. As event organiser Sian Elliott explained to City News, while recent data would suggest that there has been a steady decline in the rates of young pregnancies, this is offset by an alarming rise in young parents who are in deprivation. “Young parents in London are more likely to live in poverty and social isolation compared to anywhere in the UK. This distinction becomes even greater when you look at individual boroughs.”
Speaking with Savannah Morgan – Fung, a young mother from Hackney and an attendee at the event, she shared how she was optimistic about life as a young parent despite the challenges she continues to face. “Being a young mum is hard – especially since I am doing it on my own. I hope today’s event will help me better understand my rights and the support available.”
Moving forward, Sian Elliott hopes that today’s event is not a one-off and aims to put on a similar session in the future.
