European experts from the University of Cambridge and City University have urged the EU to change following Brexit.
Speaking to City News, Catherine Barnard, Professor of European Union Law at Cambridge said the EU needs “to wake up and smell the coffee”.
Discussing the UK’s prospects after Brexit, Professor Barnard explained:
“London will be the city which will weather Brexit more easily than elsewhere in the United Kingdom.

“All the evidence shows, including government evidence, that the effects of Brexit will not be spread evenly across the UK.
“And it’s those areas which predominantly voted leave which will be most badly affected by Brexit,” explained Barnard.

Dr Koen Slootmaeckers, lecturer in International Politics at City University, praised the EU’s achievements.
“It has created a lot of workers’ rights. It’s done a lot to correct some of the market mechanisms,” explained Slootmaeckers
However, both lecturers argue the EU needs reform if it wants to remain relevant.
Professor Barnard said “It needs to recognise that there are some deep discontents, not just with the EU, but also internally within the member states.”
