“She was a minor”
Ms Begum fled to Syria to join IS when she was a school girl in Bethnel Green in 2015. At the weekend she gave birth to a son in a Syrian refugee camp and now she wants to return to the UK.
However, Home Secretary Sajid Javid refused her request.
He used the British Nationality Act 1981 to strip Ms Begum of her British citizenship.
Emma Fox, from the Centre on Radicalisation and Terrorism at the Henry Jackson Society, agrees with Mr Javid’s decision.
She told City News that bringing Ms Begum back to the UK is a threat to public safety.
However Mr Qadir disagrees. He claims that the Home Secretary has overlooked Ms Begum’s status as a minor.
“Everybody, including the Home Secretary, has undermined and not appreciated the fact that when she went she was a minor,” explained Qadir.
“She is a British citizen”
This decision from Mr Javid was based on reports that the IS bride has Bangladeshi citizenship owing to her heritage. But this was refused by government officials.
Ms Begum’s future remains unclear but it is possible that her new-born child can be considered for British citizenship.
