Borough Market has several market vendors.
Volunteer, Anish, has been helping out on Wednesday evenings for a year and a half. He told CityNews:
“Towards the end of the day we go around to the traders, collect their surplus food. We sort out the food and prepare for charities like St Mungo’s homeless charity to collect it.”
Anish got involved with the initiative because he was shocked by the sheer amount of food that is thrown away.

‘Hunger led me to help’
Planzheroes was set up by 92-year old Lotti.
In an interview with City News, Lottie recalls how hungry she was as a refugee during the Second World War. An experience that motivated her to start the initiative and help others:
“I was so desperately hungry. I would chew pebbles to try and tell my stomach that there was something coming.”
“Plazheroes is an initiative that gives food from those who have to those in desperate need”
“Hunger led me to help. When we eat together, we form a community. Food is life.”
Lotti told City News: ‘Food is life.’
