Therapy is included in the NHS long term plan.

As part of the NHS Long Term Plan, support will be provided to patients suffering with the rare eating disorder diabulimia.

What is diabulimia?

A condition where people with Type 1 Diabetes reduce their insulin intake to lose weight.

Individuals with Type 1 diabetes need insulin in order to live.

Restricting the dosage can lead to fatal complications such as blindness and amputations.

According to the NHS it is most common in young people between ages 15 and 30.

‘Unrealistic body images’

The therapy will coach patients on how to deal with the unrealistic body images portrayed on social media networks.

Claire Murdoch, the national director for mental health at NHS England, said that “Body image pressure is helping to drive ever increasing numbers of young people to the health service for treatment and support.”

She added that the NHS is “on target to treat 95%of all children with an eating disorder.”

The service will include specialist day centres with expert dietitians.

It will also provide patients with structured meal planning and advice on insulin management.

This initiative will be trialled in London and the South Coast this year.

It is part of a plan to help children’s mental health in the age of social media.

The therapy is part of the NHS Long Term Plan, which outlines their key goals for over the next 10 years.
