Director General Tony Hall has cited ‘remarkable change’ since the introduction of the 50:50 project.
The project obliges staff and producers to monitor the gender balance of guests to achieve gender parity.
Of the 70 programmes participating, the proportion hitting an equal gender split increased from 27% to 74%.
BBC Sport News is one of the standouts, having traditionally had the greatest gender imbalances. The show had an increase in female views from 20% to 43%.
Despite progress some shows continue to miss the targets. Most notably Newsnight and some World Service output.
BBC Director-General, Tony Hall, says: “It’s amazing to see such a remarkable change in just a year – you can see and hear it right across our programming.”
Hall added: “I want the BBC to lead the way on equality and fairness, and this project demonstrates what can be achieved.”
The BBC’s 50:50 Project contributes towards the BBC’s commitment to reach 50% women on-screen, on-air and in lead roles across all genres from drama to news by 2020.
“I’m really pleased others are now following us and adopting this project for their own organisation.”
