Reuters reports that Conservative Uxbridge and South Ruislip MP will be running for Prime Minister.
Boris Johnson, Britain’s former foreign minister and a prominent campaigner to leave the European Union, has said he will run for the Conservative Party leadership after Theresa May stands down.
Asked at a business event in Manchester if he would be a candidate, the former foreign secretary replied: “Of course I’m going to go for it.”
Mrs May has said she will resign once the House of Commons backs her Brexit deal with the EU although she has not yet put a date on her departure.
Several senior Conservatives are expected to enter the contest.
The former foreign minister is May’s most outspoken critic on Brexit. He resigned from the cabinet in July in protest at her handling of the exit negotiations.
Mr Johnson was regarded by many eurosceptics as the face of the 2016 Brexit campaign.
He set out his pitch to the membership in a speech at the party’s annual conference in October – some members queued for hours to get a seat. He called on the party to return to its traditional values of low tax and strong policing.
On Thursday the BBC reported he had told The British Insurance Brokers’ Association, “Of course I’m going to go for it.”
He is the bookmakers’ favourite to succeed May.
