With Jeremy Corbyn’s decision to halt Brexit talks and numerous senior Tory MPs announcing their intentions to bid for leadership, the pressure is on the Prime Minister to vacate her position as soon as possible.
CityNews spoke to Buzzfeed’s politics editor about what he thinks the future has in store for Theresa May:
“Theresa May has come close to the end of her premiership now. It’s very difficult to see a way out for her under any circumstances after the vote on the withdrawal agreement vote after the 1st of June.
“It seems very likely that her deal will be rejected again and it’s very difficult to how she can come out of that. It’s really quite natural that cabinet ministers are putting themselves forward.
“After the vote on the Withdrawl agreement bill she will have to announce a timetable for when she plans to leave number 10.
“Tory MPs really want to get this leadership contest done by the summer so that a new Prime Minister can come in as quickly as possible.
“The clock is ticking on Brexit towards a possible no deal or revoking article 50, so a new Tory Prime Minister will absolutely want to be in as soon as possible and not want to waste any more time.
“She may try to hang on and stay as Prime Minister as this leadership contest takes place
“History suggests that Theresa May will do everything in her power to stay in the job at all costs, but I really would expect things to move quite swiftly after voting on the withdrawal agreement in the first week of June.”
