Instagram says it’s investigating how the contact details of forty-nine million of its users was stored on an unguarded online database.
Private information of celebrities and Instagram influencers – including emails and phone numbers – were made available online.
The database has been traced to Mumbai-based company Chtrbox. The firm, based in Mumbai have not yet responded when asked for a comment.
Accessing information from user profiles is strictly against the app’s policies.
Facebook, which owns Instagram, is reviewing the matter to see where this data came from, and how it became publicly available.

As the EU elections rapidly approach, research has found that ‘fake news’ is less available on Twitter than stories from reliable news organisations.
Looking at the role social media networks have in elections, the study by the Oxford Internet Institute has found that only 4% of misleading, deceptive or incorrect stories came from Twitter.
On the other hand, Facebook received four times as many likes and other interactions on their “junk” stories, compared to that of other reputable news platforms.

Nahema Marchal, co-author of the report, says none of the fake stories circulating online have come from Russian sources.
In a statement, Marchal has asserted it’s purely home-grown, hyper-partisan and alternative media that dominate” the incorrect news on the web.
