Last October, another bottle of Macallan 60-year-old single malt was sold at Bonham’s in Edinburgh.
That bottle had a label designed by Italian artist Valerio Adami, and sold for a then-world record of £848,750.
Then, a month later, a bottle from the same cask but with a label designed by Irish artist Michael Dillon became the new most expensive whisky at £1.2m.
However, today’s bottle has broken even that record. The £1.5m bottle is part of the most valuable private collection ever sold at auction. It represents the increase in market value over the last year.
Interestingly, the Scottish share of the whisky market has fallen in recent times, as Japanese and Indian whiskies improve. However, the sale today shows that Scottish single malts are still the gold standard.
