Speaking to the Press Association about the personal significance of her OBE, Hughes outlined the challenges she faced whilst studying history, including being told the subject was “redundant and old fashionable” with “little point to it.”
The historian and TV presenter thanked her “brilliant teachers” at Oxford University and the West London schools she attended.
Hughes has written over 50 TV and radio documentaries for the likes of the BBC, Channel 4, Netflix, Channel 5, National Geographic and ITV.
The 53-year-old received the award from Princess Anne at an investiture ceremony on Thursday.
