A beloved children’s centre in Highbury Fields will be demolished, with the daycare service to be moved to a new building.
In a statement, the Islington Council said that they had initially suggested on rebuilding the centre, but decided against it after realising that it would be too expensive. By sacrificing the Bandstand, the council plan to free up funds to redevelop the ‘Oasis café’.
This decision has not gone down well with some of the the parents. Barbara, who brings her child to the community centre once or twice a week, says “It will be a lot harder to go to other places because they have restricted hours and are pretty far away.”
Deputy Manager Lorraine O’Leary, who has worked at the centre for over 14 years, says that she is concerned about her financial situation and the future of her job. “I’m going to have to go because I have mortgage to pay. I can’t afford to work for eight hours a day in a community centre.”
The Islington Council has decided that the daycare service will move into a new building currently being constructed at Chirst Church in Highbury Grove.
Once the building is ready, the Highbury Fields Bandstand will be demolished.
