The Home Secretary, Priti Patel.

Over the past year, 8,640 people were offered asylum in the UK – down 20,331 in the previous year. This represents a drop of 58%.

The number of people offered asylum in the UK is now at its lowest level since 2014.

These low figures are thought to be due to the impact of the Coronavirus pandemic.

The Home Office said that lockdown restrictions, which made it harder for people to travel, was the cause for the drop.

All resettlement activity was paused between March and November 2020, while the UK was in lockdown and the majority of international travel had come to a stop.

Over the last year, there were 26,903 applications made for asylum in the UK, down 24% on the year prior.

This included 2,044 applications from unaccompanied asylum-seeking children, down 42% year-on-year.
